These are okay machines, but you're better off with a mechanical machine. A standard mechanical machine is actually substantially more "heavy duty" than a heavy duty computerized one. The key is metal gears and computerized machines, especially Brother ones tend to have plastic gears.
You should be able to find a good, solid, working Kenmore, Singer or Brother mechanical machine at an thrift store for about $25.
