0303 - Perseus was arrested, tortured, and put to death.

1564 - William Shakespeare was born. Poet, playwright ("Julius Caesar", "Romeo and Juliet", "MacBeth"), believed to have been born on April 23 based on his baptism on April 26, 1616

1872 - Charlotte E. Ray became the first black woman lawyer.

1900 - The word "hillbilly" was first used in print in an article in the "New York Journal." It was spelled "Hill-Billie".

1928 - Shirley (Jane) Temple Black was born - Child actress ("Little Miss Marker", "Heidi", "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm")

1936 - Roy Orbison was born - Singer

1954 - Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit his first major-league home run on this day.

1975 - Peter Ham (Badfinger) hung himself in his London garage at the age of 27.

1988 - Prince released the song "Alphabet St."
